Rim Number One

This weekend we focused on the one rim that I had sandblasted. I needed to get it at least primed to prevent rust from forming.

The rim still had it's flat tire on it when I got it, so first I had to figure out how to get the tire off. I couldn't so I called Michelle, tire specialist Hibdon Tires Plus at Memorial and the Creek Turnpike. She's always been so helpful in the past and she didn't fail me this time! She told me to bring to the shop and they'd take it off for free! Thanks Michelle!

Here I am cleaning the sandblasted rim with mineral spirits and a baby diaper. The baby diaper was a mistake, it left fuzz all over the surface that didn't show up until I got the first coat of primer on. Grrr...had to sand it off. Oh well, live and learn.

~~~~~
Now here I am spray painting the rim with Rustoleum Primer. The only problem I had with this was since I was spraying downward, the primer would accumulate around the nozzle and drip down onto my surface. I set the rim upright to spray it in subsequent coats.
~~~~~
Here it is after 2 coats...I sanded it lightly between coats to get that baby diaper fuzz off it, then let it dry overnight. I put a third coat on the next day.

~~~~~
The next day I coated the inside edges of the rim with rust encapsulator and then painted the outside with Rustoleum Metallic.
This is what Steve worked on...another shelving unit that his friend gave him. He got it all put together, then set it up here. He's securing the shelving to the wall of the shop by screwing it into a stud. That way it can't possibly fall over onto the car or a kid.
~~~~~
When we were at the store getting the spray paint, the boys saw this air freshener that depicts the light saber fight between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Well, they just had to have it for the Bug! Now my car doesn't smell like mouse droppings, it smells like a cinnamon roll!

  • Dear 2Jedismom: Caught your mention of the OETA Movie Club and the yummy popcorn that I serve each week. Love your website, your family portrait and "Beetle Diary". I purchased two new Beetle's in my day. A 1962 and 1965. Long gone now but I have pictures somewhere. Loved those cars. Thanks for watching the OETA Movie Club. You can catch the current schedule at www.oeta.onenet.com
    My best to you and your family, b.j. wexler, OKC (bjwexler@cox.net)
